Lecce, il Barocco è di casa

Lecce is not only the capital of Salento but also one of the world capitals of the Baroque. The Basilica of Santa Croce alone is worth a trip, but the whole city is the triumph of baroque and stone, from the magnificent facades of churches, convents and public and private buildings, up to the simplest of its balconies and its portals. The old town is discovered on foot along Via Giuseppe Libertini, which is overlooked by religious and civil buildings of great interest such as the Basilica of the Rosary, the former convent of San Domenico, the Church of St. Anne, one of Santa Teresa, the Apostolic Palace Orsini and the Hospital of the Holy Spirit.

Do not miss the magnificent Piazza Duomo, with the church built in 1144, the Bishop's Palace and the seminar. A little more in the beginning Sant'Oronzo square, with the column dedicated to the patron of the city; the former church in Venetian style; the curious seat, the former town hall with large windows because "everything had to be transparent" and the remains of the magnificent Roman amphitheater, which could accommodate less than twenty thousand spectators. Concludes visit to Lecce stop imposing castle Charles V, built in 1539, which represents the outer limit of the Renaissance city.
