In the metropolitan area of Bari, just 10 km south of the regional capital, is the cozy town of Valenzano. Valenzano covers an area of 16 sq.km. and, at the time, about 17,000 inhabitants. Its economy has always been a predominantly pastoralist, but since the seventies there were processes that have radically changed the face: agricultural activities has been considerably weakened as a result of 'expansion of service industries, which today form the basis of the economic structure of the country.
Valenzano fact, is today a dynamic modern city, full of entertainment and services; hosts settlements scientific high technology such as Technopolis, Laser Center, Mediterranean Agronomic Institute and is proposed as a development pole university. Currently there are the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine who is supporting a major initiative, the "pet therapy" or therapy assisted by animals, and the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture.
Valenzano, Peucetius settlement between 1000 and 300 BC and later became part of a Roman latifundia. The name "Valenzano", in fact, probably derives from the Roman name of the owner of the estate, or Valentius Valens. The ancient village of Valenzano is built around a watch tower built for defensive purposes in the nearby Via Ceglie old-Conversano along which stands the Benedictine Abbey of All Saints. Most likely it was the construction of the Abbey triggering the ancient village of Valenzano.
