Bari e San Nicola

Bari

Bari, one of the "pearl of the Adriatic, is the capital of the Apulia region and one of the largest cities in Italy. In recent years it has become an important tourist destination mainly due to the importance of the port of Bari, cruise stopover of great importance and to the general improvement of the infrastructure, such as the airport, who have connected to the rest of Italy and Europe.

From the point of view there are many historical and artistic beauty that the city offers: starting from the heart, the old town, or commonly called "Old Bari", with squares and picturesque views, mansions and "basements", through narrow streets you arrive in the religious heart of the city, the "Court of Catapano", where stands the beautiful Basilica of St. Nicholas, a splendid example of Apulian Romanesque. Another beauty of religion is the Cathedral of San Sabino, built in the eleventh century in Romanesque style: of particular beauty is the great rose window.
In the district Murat, the grid pattern, there is the Norman-Swabian castle built by Frederick II, with square towers and the moat that protected it from enemy invasions. With its many theaters, the first of Petruzzelli, Bari is a city of culture: the imposing headquarters of the University of Bari, the headquarters of the Journal of midday, the campus, the Provincial picture gallery ... very impressive is the waterfront Bari, built during the Fascist era, with the majestic buildings of the Province and the art gallery. Is also very developed congress tourism thanks to the "Fiera del Levante" that seventy-five years, allows companies to exhibit their products: thanks to this event Bari has earned the epithet "City bridge with the East."

Very heard is the cult of St. Nicholas: During the month of May, in the days 7-8-9 takes place the "festival of Saint Nicholas", the most awaited festival by all Bari and not. This festival commemorates the transfer of the bones of the saint who, back in May of 1087 a shipment of sailors from Bari stole and brought from Myra to Bari, in the place where today stands the basilica in honor of the saint. The event is remembered with a large medieval historical procession through the procession of the statue of the saint (of which the most striking is the "sea"), colors, folklore and great fireworks ..
