La città di Troia

Troy is located on the slopes of the plains in subappenino Dauno Puglie.Le Its origins are ancient. It was founded in the early eleventh century and before the Roman conquest of the city was known by the name of Aecae. Its territory was full of houses, churches and monasteries located around two major monasteries, one Basilian and the other Benedictine, connected by a road known as "between two lands." The catapan Basil Bojoannes rebuilt the town with the name of Troy.

MONUMENTS: the town houses many art treasures and among all emerges the Cathedral of St. Mary founded in 1019. The facade is divided into two parts. The lower one is characterized by arches and is decorated with elements derived from Pisa. Very interesting is the rose window, architectural element import which were inserted petals pierced that recall the hurdles of Byzantine origin very used in Apulian Romanesque. The side entrance of the church is of lower quality than the main one and consists of twenty-four panels of which twelve depicting the bishops of Troy.

As for the cultural aspect of the city, prominent element is the public library that promotes the formation of civil and intellectual citizens. Another element that plays an important role in the spread of the traditions of the place is the Pro Loco who has the task of protecting the tourist services offering hotel and restaurant.

 

 

HOLIDAYS 'LOCAL: Feast of the patron saints (St. Urban, St. Athanasius, St. Eleuterio, St. Secundus, St. Pontian) that is celebrated July 17 with a re-enactment in period costumes. The feast of St. Joseph where bonfires are lit "purifiers" and prepare typical foods that are offered during the event.
