Manfredonia
The city of Manfredonia is located on the gulf of the same name south of the Gargano promontory. It was founded by Manfred of Sicily in the thirteenth century, after the destruction of the ancient city of Siponto. After several excavations, were found steles Daunian (funeral slabs depicting various scenes of daily life of the deceased) carved between the eighth century and the sixth century BC The city sipontina is known for its Carnival and for the natural, historical and artistic that owns and has been designated as one of the most tourist in Italy in 2012.
The Cathedral of Manfredonia built between 1270 and 1274 was dedicated to St. Lorenzo Maiorano city's patron saint, who was bishop of Siponto. Inside there are the relics of the patron saint of the city and some works of art in the twentieth century shifted among which is the ancient icon of Our Lady of Siponto and a mighty wooden crucifix thirteenth.
