San Giovanni Rotondo
San Giovanni Rotondo is an Italian town of 27,440 inhabitants famous in the world to house the remains of St. Pio of Pietrelcina (who lived and died in these lands from September 4, 1916 to September 23, 1968). The town is part of the Gargano National Park. The town of San Giovanni Rotondo was founded in 1095 on the ruins of a village of the fourth century BC The city is home to the hospital founded by Padre Pio House for the Relief of Suffering inaugurated on May 5, 1956.
Events: major holiday is that of Santa Maria delle Grazie which occurs on days 8-9-10 September. For this occasion the painting of the Madonna delle Grazie located in the homonymous Convent of the Capuchin friars, where Padre Pio lived, is carried in procession through the streets of the country.
