Castro
Castro is situated along the east coast of the Salento peninsula, the town is of medieval origin and was a bishopric until 1818. Since October 2006, part of its territory is covered by the Park Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca established by the Puglia region.
A little 'history: in 123 BC became a Roman colony with the name of Castrum Minervae. In 1103 was elevated to the County with the family of the Altavilla and in 1270 came under the principality of Taranto and the abolition of feudalism led to the decline of Castro. The rebirth of the town and the development of the same in an active center of fishermen, artisans and tour operators from the second half of the twentieth century, brought about the return of communal autonomy in 1975.
Monuments and places of interest: Church of the Annunciation, built in 1171. The continuous interventions and renovations over the centuries have altered the original structure in the Romanesque style. You Episcopalian holder since 1969. The main facade consists of a portal and a central rose window. Side denotes the typical elements of the Apulian Romanesque.
Events: the main event of the town of Castro is the patronal feast in honor of Maria Santissima Annunziata, of April 24 to 26: in the evening of April 24 held a competition of fireworks followed by the "fish festival in sarsa" . Another major event is the representation of the historic medieval Christmas, named Christmas in the County, a live nativity scene set in the Middle Ages and made the entire historic center of Castro.
