Francavilla Fontana is nicknamed the City of Imperial in honor of the Imperial princes who ruled the city for about two centuries, bringing the feud at the apex of power. Important agricultural, craft, industrial and commercial, is the seat of the National Fair of the Ascension and in 2009 obtained from the Puglia Region recognition of "cities". Francavilla stands on an area affected by human settlements since prehistoric times, as the traces of a Neolithic village huts average.

Monuments and places of interest: the Pontifical Basilica Minore of the Most Holy Rosary built around 1320. In 1510 there were various interventions expansion. After the Earthquake of Nardo the old building was demolished and in its place was built a new church in the Baroque style, which comes with a sober façade. On the sides there are the stone statues of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Church Fathers Liguorini was ordered by Philip of Anjou to the Franciscan friars in 1322. The façade follows Renaissance elements, characterized by two columns resting on tall pedestals that frame the portal lintel and surmounted by a high relief depicting St. Alphonsus. The interior is full of stucco and gold tooling. On the main altar is placed the throne, with eight columns and dome, which contains the statue of St. Alphonsus.
Traditions and folklore: the rites of Holy Week are moments of intense religiosity. Holy Thursday starts the pilgrimage to the "Tomb" of "Pappamusci" brothers of the Brotherhood of the Carmine, who dressed in a white tunic, barefoot, hooded and with a stick in his right hand, walk slowly and in pairs. When couples of Pappamusci meet, greet beating stick on the ground and when facing each other a hug simulate taking forcefully her arms. The term "Pappamusci" seems to derive from the ancient greek "black priest." The morning of Good Friday continues the pilgrimage of "Pappamusci", while three brotherhoods carry in procession the statue of Calvary. In the evening there is the evocative Procession of the Mysteries consists of papier-mâché statues that recall the moments of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.
Local cuisine: the kitchen francavillese is linked to farm life. Some typical products are: almond curly, produced exclusively in Francavilla and was included among the traditional food of Puglia. It is a sweet almond hard. Cartellate, tapes are of a thin sheet of paste, obtained with flour, oil and white wine, wound on itself, to form a shape that resembles a kind of pink choreography, with cavities and openings, which will then be fried in plenty of olive oil. This specialty is typical of the Christmas period.
