Nardo is located on the Ionian coast of Tavoliere Salentino and is crossed by Channel Ace, probable trace of an ancient waterway. The city has ancient roots. His birth as a town dates back to the seventh century BC with traces of Messapian settlement. In the period 552-554, was absorbed from the Byzantine Empire. In 1055 the Normans conquered the city and to the Benedictine monks were allowed to settle in the Abbey of Santa Maria di Nerito.

Monuments and places of interest: cathedral basilica Santa Maria Assunta which stands on the site where it was founded the ancient Basilian church of Santa Maria di Nerito by some Eastern monks who in the seventh century escaped the iconoclastic persecution. Over the centuries the church has undergone several renovations that have altered the original architectural layout.
The church of San Domenico, built between 1580 and 1594 by Giovanni Maria Tarantino and Gio Thomas Riccio, was initially entitled to Santa Maria de Raccomandatis. Following the earthquake of 1743 the factory was almost completely destroyed, with the exception of the façade made carparo. Inside the different altars stands the Madonna of the Rosary.
The construction of the seat is linked to the founding of the university Neretina, built in the period of socio-economic recovery, planting Renaissance, the facade has a rococo style.
