Canosa di Puglia is located on the northwest edge of the Murgia plateau that dominates the valley dell'Ofanto. It is considered one of the major archaeological sites in Puglia. Canosa finds and vases are visible in all major museums while the evidence of its past are scattered in the present city and in the surrounding territory.

Its origins: it is thought that its origin is tied to the hero Diomedes greek. Before his Greek strategic position attracted the interest of the Romans, Canosa lived a long period of peace keeping contacts with the colony of Taranto (IV-III century BC), which allowed her to absorb traditions and culture greek-Hellenistic.
The first contacts with the empire are traced back to 318 BC, when the city signed a treaty of alliance with Rome while retaining its local autonomy. Subsequently, however Canosa was stripped of its status as allied city and became a mere imperial colony, Colonia Aurelia Augusta Pia Canasium.


Despite the political changes Canosa was able to keep alive and active local economic production specializing in the manufacture of wool in particular the red one used largely to dress soldiers and known throughout the empire.

The church of the Passion was built in 1874 on the ruins of the palace headquarters of the Council of Wisdom comes to town and spontaneous people's devotion to the Blood of Christ.
In fact, the original name of the church was Oratory Church of the Precious Blood, and was later dedicated to Santa Chiara.
Devotion is linked to Madonna Addolorata, of which a beautiful eighteenth century statue is kept inside the church. Formerly the center of the altar there was a crucifix in papier mache, which currently is at the right of the entrance of the church.

 

The nineteenth-century Palazzo Casieri hosts the renowned Museum in frescoed rooms from Paloscia hosts archaeological and historical finds of rare value. You can admire inscriptions, sculptures, reliefs, marbles, coins, jewelry, ceramics and much.
