Gravina in Puglia

Gravina in Puglia houses the headquarters of the National Park of Alta Murgia. The name "Gravina" refers to the ravines (cracks in the earth's crust-like canyon).

Its territory has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic. He was first influenced by the Greeks and then occupied by Rome. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire was incorporated into the domain of the invading Lombards. After many years Gravina became the protagonist of the historical events of the late nineteenth century and contributed greatly to the Unification of Italy with patriots and martyrs of the independence wars and the First World War.

 

Monuments and places of interest: the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the Romanesque style. But between 1447ed 1456 was destroyed chased an earthquake that shook the entire region. He waited thirty years for its reconstruction took place thanks to Bishop Matthew D'Aquino. Today the church looks like a synthesis of different architectural styles: the late Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque. The interior of the church has a carved wooden ceiling and gilded baroque.

   

 

Among the most interesting monuments should not forget the Castle of Frederick II built by Frederick II of Swabia in 1231 and situated on top of a small hill. The castle, a rectangular layout with four towers, consisted of three floors, of which today only part of the perimeter walls and the base.
The Monument of the Fallen was cast in bronze by sculptor Angelo Galli and is located in the center of the town park. The flag representing Italy, seems to become one with the horse in the race while the soldiers at the bottom represent the movement of the Italian people who rebels against oppression.

Dishes: the kitchen gravinese offers dishes that are unique in the culinary kind. Typical products are the cardoncello: a fungus that grows in Murgia Gravina. You can add it to sauces to accompany early with homemade pasta. Focaccia di San Giuseppe is prepared with the mixture of the cake with a filling of salted anchovies. Along with other dishes like breeches and sweet ricotta stuffed chicken sweet represent the sweet and sour taste of the kitchen Gravina in its authenticity.

Events and festivals: the Fair of San Giorgio, which is repeated every April since 1294. It is one of the oldest fairs in Italy and worldwide. Feast of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Philip Blacks: festivals dedicated to the patron and the patron of the city. It takes place on 28, 29 and 30 September. On 29 September, the day of the patron saint, there is a procession that leaves the chapel called Bruno, located on Corso Aldo Moro and then proceed to the town square and finally the church of Sant'Agostino, where the statue of the patron is published.
