Barletta (varrèt in local dialect) is a town of 93 097 inhabitants, co-capital of the new province of Barletta-Andria-Trani operational in 2008. It flourished in the Middle Ages as a fortress of the Normans in the sixteenth century during the war between France and Spain, was the scene of historical events including the memorable Challenge of Barletta (02/13/1503), won by the Spaniards who were strengthening the walls and castle. The walls now remained only the famous port Marina located in the 'homonymous square.
The majestic castle is, even today, a 'major tourist attraction and the first monument one encounters entering the city. The restoration of the castle have also allowed us to create space for the headquarters of the Civic Museum and the Municipal Library.
